Caring for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

April 30, 2026 | 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience significant health inequities. Family physicians and primary care providers play a key role in addressing these gaps. In this session, our panelists will review Ontario‑based research on health disparities and introduce the Canadian Consensus Guidelines on the Primary Care of Adults with IDD. We will explore practical approaches to physical and mental health care, including preventive screening, chronic disease management, supported decision‑making, and strategies for assessing behaviours that challenge. Practical tools from the Developmental Disabilities Primary Care Program will be highlighted, with case examples demonstrating how they can be applied in everyday family practice.

The Health Equity Community of Practice for Ontario Family Physicians Community of Practice has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+ credit.
