Dr. Susan Wilkinson

Biography

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with my MD degree in 1979.  I completed one year of family medicine in Regina and completed the second year of family medicine in Ottawa in 1981.  During the second year residency in family medicine, the resident on my surgical rotation introduced me to horseback riding and then left me looking after her horse while she went to England to complete a final year of surgical training.  I did locums for about six months and then joined another female physician in practise for 10 years.  I stayed in Ottawa because my surgical resident friend convinced me to buy a horse.  That horse and subsequently her daughter kept me healthy through all my years of medical practise and also led to my introduction to my life partner.  I then moved to my own office and practised as a single family physician associated with a FHG.  I moved to an electronic medical record in 2008 and then joined the FHG associated with that record.  I maintained my practise until Dec 2022.  I closed my family practise in Dec 2022, leaving most of my patients without a family doctor.  Since May 2023  I have done four hours per week of virtual care in order to be of help in the on-going lack of doctors in our medical system.

I have been involved with the Federation of Medical Women of Canada since about 1995 and am still on the Executive of FMWC.
