Ontario College of Family Physicians welcomes Dr. Eric Wong as 66th President
OCFP marks a new chapter in leadership and welcomes its 2026–27 Board of Directors
TORONTO, ON, September 28, 2026 – The Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) is proud to welcome Dr. Eric Wong, marking a new chapter in the organization’s leadership and its ongoing work to champion family physicians across Ontario.
Dr. Wong officially began his term following the OCFP’s Annual Meeting of Members on September 10 and was formally celebrated at the President’s Installation on September 24.
Dr. Wong is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Acting Vice Dean, Medical Education, at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. An academic family physician with extensive leadership experience in medical education, he also serves as Clinical Director for Practice Ready Ontario.
After serving as OCFP President-Elect for the past two years, Dr. Wong begins his presidency with a hopeful, forward-looking vision for family medicine. His priorities include supporting family physician wellness and resiliency, strengthening connections across the family medicine community, developing the next generation of family physician leaders, and ensuring family physicians have a strong voice in shaping Ontario’s health care system.
“It is an incredible honour to serve as OCFP President,” said Dr. Wong. “There is a lot to be hopeful about in family medicine, and I’m excited about what we can accomplish together. I want family physicians to feel supported, connected, and confident in the future of our profession, and to know they have an important role in shaping it.”
Dr. Wong succeeds Dr. Jobin Varughese, who served as President from 2024 to 2026. . During his term as President, Dr. Varughese was a strong advocate for family physicians, bringing their experiences and concerns to government, system partners, and the public, and helping advance solutions to strengthen family medicine in Ontario. Under his leadership, the OCFP advanced practical solutions to support family physicians in practice and expanded professional development opportunities, including the Changing the Way We Work, Health Equity, and Practising Well Communities of Practice, as well as its leadership development programs. “It has been a tremendous privilege to represent Ontario’s family physicians,” said Dr. Varughese. “I’m incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and excited to see what comes next under Dr. Wong’s leadership.”
OCFP CEO Deepy Sur recognized Dr. Varughese’s contributions and the opportunities ahead under Dr. Wong’s leadership.
“Dr. Varughese has been a passionate and dedicated champion for family physicians, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership,” said Sur. “Dr. Wong brings a thoughtful, collaborative leadership style and a deep commitment to family medicine. His experience, optimism, and dedication to the profession will help guide the OCFP’s work to support family physicians.
The OCFP also welcomed its 2026–27 Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting of Members. Together with Dr. Wong, the Board will help guide the OCFP’s strategic direction and its work on behalf of family physicians across Ontario.
