SUMMARY:Exploring Psychosocial Interventions in Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:Chronic pain is widely recognized as a bio-psycho-social phenomenon\, yet family physicians often rely solely on medication management strategies. Understanding the scientific role of biological\, psychological and social factors in mediating chronic pain\, as well as the resources available beyond medication management\, can leave providers feeling more empowered in caring for patients with these issues. In this session\, our panel will review the current understanding of the etiology of chronic pain\, including its biological\, psychological and social/environmental components and discuss non-pharmacologic strategies for managing all three. Psychological factors such as unhelpful beliefs\, worries\, fears\, and avoidance behaviours\, as well as resources to support patients in this area\, will be addressed. Social factors like unsupportive work environments\, stressful situations or insurance issues will also be covered. \n\n\n\nThe Practising Well Community of Practice has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+Ⓡcredits. SUMMARY:Antimicrobial Stewardship in Primary Care: Audit and Feedback to Improve Antibiotic Prescribing
DESCRIPTION:Antimicrobial resistance is a rising global public health crisis with an estimated 1.27 million attributable deaths per year worldwide. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics are important modifiable drivers of rising drug-resistant infections. The majority of antibiotics are prescribed by primary care physicians. Peer comparison audit and feedback on antibiotic prescribing is a potentially scalable and effective intervention. Effective audit and feedback incorporate behavioural science principles to drive behaviour change and improve the quality of patient care. This talk will review recent evidence on the effectiveness of antibiotic audit and feedback in primary care as well as current and future initiatives to incorporate audit and feedback into antimicrobial resistance action plans in Ontario. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDiscuss the implications for incorporating antibiotic audit and feedback into AMR action plans and antimicrobial stewardship\n\n\n\nIdentify the important public health threat from antimicrobial resistance (AMR)\n\n\n\nDescribe the risks of antibiotic overuse\n\n\n\nInterpret recent data on the effectiveness of antibiotic audit and feedback in primary care\n\n\n\n\nPanelist:\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Schwartz\, MD MSc FRCPC DTM&H\, is the division head for infectious diseases at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto and co-medical director for antimicrobial stewardship at Unity Health Toronto. He is an academic infection control and antimicrobial stewardship physician at Public Health Ontario\, an assistant professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto\, and an adjunct scientist at ICES. His clinical area of interest is adult and pediatric infectious diseases and tropical medicine. His research interests include vaccine preventable diseases and antimicrobial stewardship with a particular focus on improving community antibiotic use to slow the emergence of drug-resistant infections. \n\n\n\nWatch the recording:

SUMMARY:Pride in family medicine: Gender affirming care
DESCRIPTION:In Canada\, one in 300 people ages 15 and older are transgender or non-binary\, meaning that most family doctors care for gender non-conforming people in their practice.  However\, these patients face unique societal and medical barriers that put them at higher risk for mental health issues and higher than average suicide rates. Providing a safe environment and knowing how to access or provide gender affirming care is essential to address mental health needs of these communities of people. In this session\, our panel will share their experiences in creating safe spaces for transgender and or non-binary patients and share resources that will help family doctors to support these patients. \n\n\n\nThe Practising Well Community of Practice has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+Ⓡcredits. SUMMARY:Addressing Bias: Utilizing emerging therapeutics amidst fat-shaming
DESCRIPTION:Rising rates of obesity and diabetes\, drug shortages\, patient demand and societal discussions around fat-shaming\, have placed family physicians in a difficult position\, at times acting as gatekeepers for medications\, determining which patients should gain access to GLP-1 agonists. Broader societal discussion around what constitutes ‘health’ and ‘overweight’ may leave physicians feeling alone in grappling with these ethical decisions. Watch our panel as they address their approach as stewards of these medications and share how they engage in these larger societal discussions. \n\n\n\nThe Practising Well Community of Practice has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+Ⓡcredits.
